The “Backyarders” in South Africa are somewhere between home-owner and homeless. They erect shacks in people’s backyards and pay rent for very low quality living conditions, with outside bathrooms and insecure tenacies. This is the story of “Ruo Emoh” in Mitchell’s Plain, which was a 20 year journey of residents gaining their first homes, with the support for the charities CORC and SDI Alliance.
